Maruti Suzuki Swift and Datsun Go Fails Global NCAP Crash Test

The popular Maruti Suzuki Swift and Datsun GO have failed the recent crash tests conducted by Global NCAP. The Swift has obtained a zero star rating in 64 kmph frontal collision test. Datsun Go obtained a two-star rating which is slightly better than the Swift. Global NCAP is an independent agency that offers vehicle safety rating and it depends on the performance of car in different crash tests that includes front, pole and side impacts.

Two variants of the car are tested one is sold in Indian auto sector and the other is exported to Latin America. And in the model exported, airbags and Antilock Braking System are standard while the Indian base variant does not have these safety features. In global NCAP test, it is essential that even the base variants should have airbags and Antilock Braking System. So basically both the cars were disqualified.

Max Mosley, Chairman, Global NCAP said that, “India has the possibility to be the world leader in automobile industry, but the Indian customers do not know about how unsafe  they are when a crash takes place. It is critical for safety of the passenger and we are pleased that India is about to launch an NCAP consumer testing programme. If it takes place, each and every new car sold in India will be offered with a well crash structure and airbags”. Earlier in the month of January, other small cars like Tata Nano, Hyundai i10 and Maruti Suzuki’s Alto 800 failed to clear the Global NCAP’s crash tests.
